Position: President, Founding Member E-mail: elizabeth@hanaeleh.com Horses Owned: Gueniviere- Arabian Mare, Tamahome- Tennessee Walker Elizabeth has been in love with horses since she remembers having a conscious thought. When she was 11 she was allowed to take English riding lessons, and in her last year of college she leased a rescue horse she named “Ginger.” It was at that time she conceived the idea of Hanaeleh, an organization which would help to rescue abused and neglected horses. With the purchase of Cleopatra from a feedlot in May of 1999, Elizabeth knew that she also had to work to end horse slaughter in the United States. At that time she began to work towards creating Hanaeleh as a non-profit organization. Today Elizabeth owns two horses- Gueniviere (Gwen), a horse she rescued through the Arabian Horse Rescue Network website and Thriller, a Tennesee Walker- and serves as Hanaeleh’s president. She gives equitation and trail lessons at her stable and is involved in various organizations, including serving as the California representative for ATHA as well as the Joint-DC for the Santa Ana Winds Pony Club. She still rides primarily English, even when hacking out on trail.
Position: Treasurer E-mail:lori@hanaeleh.com Horses Owned: Fostering "Sugarbear"- rescued Thoroughbred mare Lori has dreamed of riding horses since she was a child. Until about a year ago, however, Lori and horses were distant strangers. Several unfortunate riding experiences convinced her that horses were not to be a part of her life. In 2005, Lori’s daughter Megan finally persuaded her to investigate riding lessons. In May, Megan and Lori stopped by Elizabeth’s stable asking about riding lessons. As luck would have it, Elizabeth happened to be there and invited Lori and Megan in for a chat. After about an hour just talking, Lori and Elizabeth agreed on riding lessons for Megan. The first lesson was difficult as Lori watched her twelve-year-old learn to groom and care for the very animals she had been afraid of for so long. But, lesson after lesson, Lori watched, listened and learned from Elizabeth and her horses just how magnificent these creatures really are. Lori also learned about the reality of horse slaughter. Meeting Cleo, one of Elizabeth’s rescued horses, was proof positive that Hanaeleh was an organization that Lori wanted to be a part of. Lori and Megan love and care for Sugarbear, a rescued Thoroughbred mare. While Lori does not own her own horse yet, she serves as Hanaeleh’s treasurer as well as treasurer for the Santa Ana Winds Pony Club.
