End Horse Slaughter Now!

Montana’s legislature has produced a bill that would once again legalize horse slaughter in the United States.  This is why it is so important to get a federal bill passed!  Until we have federal legislation, we will constantly be working to keep individual states from slaughtering horses.

Montana’s representatives were the same people who authorized the loophole in the Appropriations bill several years ago that allowed protected wild horses and burros to be caught and sold for the purpose of slaughter so that ranchers could graze their private cattle herds on federal lands!  This is not about horses– this is about money.  It is sick how people can twist the fate of our equines to make a few dollars.

There you will find links to tell Congress that we need to stop slaughter– not allow it to fester!

This letter has been circulating around the horse rescue sites– it is a letter from the former mayor of Kaufman, TX, where Dallas Crown Slaughtering Plant killed thousands of horses until it was finally shut down.  She details a great many issues, including the waste issues that stemmed from poor operation of the plant, the business’ refusal to comply with basic state laws and taxes, water quality issues from the waste from the plant, and the inordinate amount of legal issues that the city had to deal with because of the poor running of the plant.  This is nothing to the tantamount cruelty that went on in the plant, including the screaming of the horses and horrific odor that seeped through the city’s streets.

Why would anyone want to include this in their own city?  Ask cities in Montana and Utah, as they are working to try to reinstate horse slaughter.

HR. 503 has been introduced into the 111th Congress, and we need your support to help pass this important piece of legislation.

HR. 503, named the Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act of 2009, is otherwise known as the Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act because both Conyers and Burton introduced the legislation.

The bill will end the purchase, sale or transportation of any equine for the purpose of human consumption. This will allow us to prosecute or even stop the sale of horses that go to Canadian and Mexican slaughterhouses.
