When Hanaeleh’s members saw Mr. Ed, he was in so much pain that he literally could not move from the front of his stall to the back. After two months of bute therapy and some physical therapy as well, Mr. Ed was sound enough to take to his new home in Petaluma with a woman named Cara who works actively to stop killer buyers from purchasing horses for the purpose of slaughter. Mr. Ed now lives with a man and his grandchildren, who love to groom him and feed him carrots! |

Beauty’s owner came to Hanaeleh because she needed to find a home for her arthritic, 26 year-old horse. Beauty is a very sweet horse, but her arthritis kept her from being easily adoptable. Hanaeleh contacted Cara, who had taken Mr. Ed, and she was willing to take Beauty for her mother (see picture). Hanaeleh took yet another 10-hour trip up to Petaluma where they dropped off Beauty and said hello to Mr. Ed. Beauty lives in a pasture with the other “crippled” horses on Cara’s ranch.

Turbo was one of four horses that Hanaeleh took in when they were told of a woman who had passed away suddenly when her tractor flipped backwards onto her. The family did not want the horses, and thought that they had no other choice except to put them down until Hanaeleh stepped in. Turbo was difficult to place as he was an older stallion, but he was adopted by a wonderful woman, Rhonda A., who is a proponent for natural-gaited horses. He had a bout with laminitis, but is currently putting weight on and is doing very well! |

Andante was one of four horses that Hanaeleh took in when they were told of a woman who had passed away suddenly when her tractor flipped backwards onto her. The family did not want the horses, and thought that they had no other choice except to put them down until Hanaeleh stepped in. Andante was adopted by Hanaeleh’s secretary at the time, Jill M., who recently took Andante and her other rescued horse to Arizona. Andante is doing well with his new pasture mate and they are enjoying the trails around the area together! |

Napoleon was donated to Hanaeleh when his owner became too elderly to care for him. He was very fat when we got him– so fat he had to have shoes on and was laid up for 6 weeks because the vet was afraid he would founder! Napoleon found a wonderful home with a wonderful family who thinks that “Napoleon is just the greatest horse that ever lived. He is so well mannered and polite around the kids. He loves his carrots and apples and he loves to be put in a stock trailer and go for a picnic trail ride.” We’re so happy for little Napoleon! |

Jesse is a red-dun Quarter Horse who had a bad start– he was broken at too young of an age, and his owner tried to bully him and force him to try to buck or rear. Instead of fighting back, Jesse developed ulcers from the constant stress. After coliccing several times, his owner gave Jesse to Hanaeleh. Jesse was adopted by a wonderful family who had some trouble with him at first, but stuck it out and now who thinks that he is the greatest horse– he is currently learning how to jump and is ridden by their daughter. |

Tamahome means “devil” or “evil” in Japanese, and with his past, his name fits him. It isn’t his original name, but since he was stolen once before we changed it. Tamahome had a very difficult few years of his life– he was broken at two, sold and returned twice (he broke one owner’s hip) and his third owner had him with two trainers who abused him. Tamahome is a very special guy who is very smart, and he is like a big black lab if you treat him right! He is a permanent resident of Hanaeleh due to the fact that he is so sensitive and still unpredictable. |

Horses who have left us |
|
We miss all of our friends who have passed before us, but we remember them and keep them alive in our hearts. |
|
Cleopatra (Cleo) was the main driving force behind creating Hanaeleh– she was our inspiration and her daily courage, her will to live and her desire to just “go” helped spur us on. Unfortunately, Cleo colicced on January 12th in 2006, after complications from a riding accident the previous year, and her passing has left a void that cannot be filled, and has made us that much emptier. Cleo is the face behind our logo, and our hope is that her memory will help us help other horses, and, in that way, keep her alive. |

Chief is a main reason that Hanaeleh was created– he was a triple-registered, absolutely gorgeous Tennessee Walker, but due to a divorce he was neglected and his owner did not want him. Chief was rehabilitated and greatly loved by Lori B., who worked with Chief for hours, getting him over his fear of pretty much everything. The fact that he had an eye missing did not help, but Lori did not care, she loved him so much. Chief colicced during the October, 2007 fires and, while he had surgery, we had to put him down on January 23, 2008. |

Starlight was Napoleon’s pasture mate (see above). When we came out to see her, we were unhappily greeted with what looked like a severe case of founder. Starlight had been seen regularly by a vet who had merely prescribed a few tablets of bute for what must have been severe pain. Starlight had worn all of the skin away on her hips where she lay down, and while we were there, developed an arterial bleed. With the owner’s blessing, we made the arrangements to allow Starlight to go to sleep and to escape from her constant pain. |

Prophet was never a Hanaeleh horse, but he was loved by the people in Hanaeleh. Prophet was a beautiful Friesian who had a very mischievous personality and was more horse than his owner wanted. He sand colicced twice and was sent to the hospital both times, and eventually he was given to Hanaeleh’s president. She only had him for 10 weeks when his colon burst– although a vet was on the premises, he died within minutes. We wish we could have known him longer, but he was definitely loved for the short time we knew him. |

Hershey came to Hanaeleh because his owner could no longer afford to care for him. He had some issues of abuse and neglect in the past, and would threaten to kick or bite. Hanaeleh wanted to find the right person– someone who would dote on him and love him and think that he was the best horse in the world. Sara R. is just that person- she has done an exceptional job of spoiling him! She has renamed him Humphrey and he now has his own new blog you can check out! http://lifewithhumphrey.blogspot.com |

Heart of Battle was one of four horses that Hanaeleh took in when they were told of a woman who had passed away suddenly when her tractor flipped backwards onto her. When Hanaeleh first saw Heart, she had an abscess that hadn’t been cared for, and was very depressed. She found a wonderful home with Myrna V. through the Exceller Fund, and had a wonderful two years of being spoiled and pampered as any horse would love! Heart suffered from a stroke in March, and was lovingly allowed to pass away with dignity and grace. |

We are so happy for all of our horses who have wonderful new lives! |

Cesar is a purebred, registered Arabian. He was donated to Hanaeleh because his breeder wanted a filly instead of a colt, and the only other offer on Cesar was the slaughterhouse. Hanaeleh paid to have him gelded, and spent two years letting Cesar grow up before training him. Cesar is a very special little boy, and in 2006 a very special couple, Carl and Phyllis, adopted Cesar to keep their mare company. He now has the run of the pasture, all the hay he can get, and a trainer to keep him occupied! (Picture: Cesar is the horse on the left!) |

Horses who have found new homes! |

Sugarbear was trained as a hunter/ jumper, and at 13 was retired to a pasture where she was neglected and starved. Finally, she was forced to break her own tail off when she got it caught in a fence. She was rescued from that situation, then sold, and her new owner eventually donated Sugarbear to Hanaeleh. When Hanaeleh took over Sugarbear’s care, she could barely canter and because of her past neglect, Hanaeleh had to have all of her back teeth removed. Sugarbear was doing very well, but sadly passed away in July, 2009. |

Guiniviere is a registered Polish Arabian who was a broodmare until her owner passed. She was given to a girl who then gave her to Hanaeleh’s founder. Gwen was quite crazy at first and broke numerous halters and lead ropes when she refused to be tied. Quite a bit of patience along with a lot of aggravation (and almost-broken noses when she decided to toss her head!), Gwen turned out to be a great trail and lesson horse. Gwen suffered from severe arthritis in her knee and we finally had to allow her to pass to free her from her pain. |

Rio came to Hanaeleh because his owner could no longer afford his board, and wanted to make sure that he went to a wonderful home! Rio is a cute little Arab/paint cross who has had extensive training in trailering, packing, trail riding, etc. He knows all of Parelli’s 7 games, and is just an overall sweet horse! Rio was quickly adopted by Hanaeleh’s treasurer, Lori B., partly because she has an affinity towards paints, and mostly because Rio is just such a wonderful and personable horse! |

Caspian was left to starve to death in a backyard when his owner’s home went into foreclosure. Luckily a neighbor called Animal Control and rescued him! He then went to the Hollywood Dolls Horse Club and finally came to Hanaeleh. Caspian needed a special home because he had been taught to rear on command, and would “test” all of his riders, but was still very sweet. One of our volunteers and her daughter fell in love with Caspian and decided to make him their own! He is definitely in a place where he gets a lot of love! |

Baron came to Hanaeleh and has a very special place in our hearts! He is a wonderful boy and was definitely a favorite with our volunteers. When we first got Baron he was fearful and shy– now he is an outgoing and loving guy. Baron needed a home with a knowledgeable and calming owner, and he got that with Robyn R. He has a wonderful new home on 22 acres that he gets to share with two other horses! While we definitely miss him, we are so happy for Baron! |

Another rescue called us about Zorro– his owner passed away and, after being a loyal family member for over 20 years, the brother was going to sell Zorro to a killer buyer to be shipped to the slaughterhouse. This was definitely a team effort– Red Bucket Equine Rescue trailered him to Hanaeleh, where we kept him for a few days before trailering him down to Blue Apple Ranch in Ramona, CA. He is now living out the rest of his days in pasture where all good horse friends should be able to go after giving their best years to people! |
