What
is Hanaeleh?
Hanaeleh is a dream that was
started when Elizabeth purchased a bay Arabian mare from a
feedlot in Chino, California in May of 1999. She had been
browsing the internet looking at horses. She received a phone
call a short time later from Gail at TIER Equine Rescue, who told her that there was a bay
Arabian at the feedlot with the biggest "doe-eyes" and the sweetest
disposition! Gail also told Elizabeth that the owner of the
feedlot had called her several times that week, which meant that the
horses would be shipped out by Friday to slaughter.
And thus begins Cleopatra's beginnings at Hanaeleh- truly, thus begins
Hanaeleh. Cleopatra
has proven beyond doubt that horses that are shipped to slaughter are
not "nags," they are not lame, and they are not dangerous creatures.
Horses that are shipped to slaughterhouses are merely the result
of a bad draw in life- one which dealt them an owner who could not
afford them, could not train them, or had some other excuse as to why
they shipped their companion to an auction house instead of a safe
home. With the purchase of Cleopatra (Cleo), Hanaeleh was born- a way to stop these beautiful creatures from
being slaughtered. If Cleo, a completely untrained horse, could
come off of a feedlot and prove to the world that she could accomplish
as much as those horses purchased for thousands of dollars, perhaps
the world would understand to what they were turning a blind eye-
not an industry that humanely put down old, decrepit horses, but
an industry that was cruelly destroying beautiful animals whose
potential had not yet been tapped.
